Bell pepper seedlings in Sinaloa: germination, tray and care

Sinaloa is the heart of Mexico's protected agriculture, and bell pepper is one of its most important export crops. It all starts in the nursery: a pepper that germinates unevenly or leaves the nursery with a weak root drags that delay through the entire cycle. Here is the essential of the seedling stage.

How long bell pepper takes to germinate

Bell pepper is slow to germinate compared with crops like cucumber or tomato. With the right temperature, emergence typically happens between 7 and 14 days after sowing. The key is steady conditions: pepper seed punishes swings in temperature and moisture.

Optimal germination temperature

The optimal range sits between 25 and 30 °C. Below that range germination stretches out and turns uneven; above it, the seed is stressed. In the greenhouse this is managed with environment control and, in the first days, by moving trays into a dark room to even out germination, uncovering them as soon as the first shoots emerge.

Recommended tray for bell pepper

For bell pepper, a cell of 25 to 45 cm³ is recommended, equivalent to 128 to 200-cell trays. The reason is the root: pepper needs substrate volume to build a strong root before transplant. Cells that are too small produce weak seedlings and tangled roots.

  • Recommended tray: 128 to 200 cells (cell of 25 to 45 cm³).
  • Days to germinate: 7 to 14 days.
  • Optimal temperature: 25 to 30 °C.
  • Goal: a strong, well-formed root before transplant.

Key nursery care

Managing pepper in the nursery rests on three pillars: gentle overhead or micro-sprinkler irrigation that doesn't damage the seedling, with water at a pH between 5.5 and 6.5; humidity control and biosecurity, with footwear and hand disinfection on entry to prevent nursery diseases such as damping-off; and disinfection of reused trays between cycles.

With pepper, the patience of the nursery is repaid in the field: a well-rooted seedling starts without stumbles.

From nursery to transplant

As a rule of thumb, seedlings are grown several weeks ahead of the transplant date to arrive at the right point. At HDA Seed Greenhouses we grow transplant-ready bell pepper seedlings in Campo El Diez, Culiacán. To reserve seedlings for your next cycle, message us with your variety and volume.
