Crops

Guide by crop: cucumber, pepper, chili, tomato, eggplant and Asian greens

Technical reference for seedling production by crop, based on standard protected-agriculture practice in Sinaloa.

The values below are regional references. The exact protocol is adjusted by variety, cycle and greenhouse conditions.

Cucumber

Recommended tray
128 – 200 cells
Days to germination
3 – 6 days
Optimal temperature
25 – 30 °C

Key care pointFast, even emergence; watch excess moisture to prevent seed-tray disease.

Bell Pepper

Recommended tray
128 – 200 cells (25 – 45 cm³)
Days to germination
7 – 14 days
Optimal temperature
25 – 30 °C

Key care pointAvoid very small cells: they produce weak seedlings and tangled roots, delaying crop establishment.

Hot Peppers

Recommended tray
200 – 242 cells
Days to germination
8 – 14 days
Optimal temperature
25 – 30 °C

Key care pointSlower to germinate than bell pepper; keep steady warmth and moisture until emergence.

Tomato

Recommended tray
128 – 200 cells
Days to germination
5 – 8 days
Optimal temperature
24 – 28 °C

Key care pointVery vigorous; manage light well to avoid leggy, stretched seedlings before transplant.

Eggplant

Recommended tray
128 – 200 cells
Days to germination
8 – 14 days
Optimal temperature
25 – 30 °C

Key care pointSlow to germinate; needs steady warmth and patience in the seed tray.

Asian Greens

Recommended tray
242 – 288 cells
Days to germination
3 – 5 days
Optimal temperature
20 – 25 °C

Key care pointShort cycle and high density; small seed that benefits from a larger cell per plant.

Seed-tray best practices

How a uniform seedling is cared for

  1. 01

    Dark room the first days

Trays are covered and moved into darkness to even out germination, uncovering them as soon as the first shoots emerge.

  2. 02

    Gentle irrigation, controlled pH

Overhead or micro-sprinkler irrigation so the seedling isn't damaged, with irrigation water at a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.

  3. 03

    Greenhouse biosecurity

Footwear and hand disinfection on entry and humidity control to prevent seed-tray diseases such as damping-off.

  4. 04

    Trays disinfected between cycles

Trays are reusable and disinfected between cycles as part of crop-protection management.

Micro-sprinkler irrigation falling as a fine mist over the seedling trays.
